Truist Bank

Premium tier on an award-rated mobile bank

Truist Wealth mobile concept

Overview

Truist is a top-10 U.S. bank, formed by the merger of BB&T and SunTrust. The Truist Mobile app is the everyday banking surface for tens of millions of customers across consumer, business, and Wealth segments.

I joined the mobile team as a Senior UI Designer focused on the Wealth tier - the high-net-worth experience layered on top of the standard app. Wealth customers see a differentiated dashboard, dedicated advisor access, and premium feature flows wrapped around the same banking core that millions of mass-market customers use.

Role: Senior UI Designer, Truist Wealth Mobile (iOS, Android). Tenure: October 2020 to June 2021.

Role

Senior UI Designer on the Wealth tier of the Truist Mobile app. I owned shipped UIs end-to-end - from spec to engineering handoff - across iOS and Android. I contributed components and patterns to the Tru Design System, the cross-product system that the wider Truist app teams build against.

I participated in research alongside dedicated UX researchers, sitting in on sessions and reviewing findings to shape the Wealth-tier flows.

The problem

Truist serves several customer types on the same app: mass-market consumer, business banking, and Wealth. They share infrastructure, components, and a single design system. A change in the Wealth tier rarely stays in the Wealth tier.

That made the constant work less about pixels and more about alignment. A new premium feature pattern could ripple into the consumer experience, into business banking, and into the downstream services that depend on those flows. Every shipped UI had to land cleanly inside that web of dependencies.

Most of the day-to-day was spent reconciling that: making sure the Wealth-tier differentiation was real and visible to the customer, while keeping the rest of Truist's experiences whole.

What shipped

The scope of the Wealth tier was equivalent to what Robinhood Gold offers as a premium layer - a differentiated dashboard, a consolidated portfolio view across cash and investments, dedicated advisor access patterns, and a set of premium feature flows that the standard tier didn't have.

For Truist, this work sat on top of the same core banking app a mass-market customer would open. The premium experience had to feel distinct without forking the codebase.

Outcomes

The Truist Mobile app sits at 4.8 out of 5 on the Apple App Store with over 1 million ratings, and at 4.8 out of 5 on Google Play with 5M+ downloads. That places it at the top of the U.S. retail-banking app category.

My contributions to the Tru Design System and the Wealth-tier flows continued to ship in the app long after my tenure.

A note on assets

Most original work was created in AdobeXD behind enterprise security walls - the visuals shown here are recreations representing the scope and visual direction of what shipped, not the original artifacts.
